Hi, I’m Richard

I’m not a psychologist or a life coach. I’m a Watch Commander in the UK Fire Service. I joined in 1999 and I’ve spent more than 25 years running towards other people’s emergencies. I also run my own fire risk assessment business, Whale Fire Ltd, and I’m a youth football coach and part of Horley United Football Club.
So why write a book about habits?
Because I know what it’s like to be stuck. The extra plate when you’re not even hungry. The one drink that turns into four. The bet that’s meant to win it all back. The phone that’s in your hand before you’ve even decided to pick it up, and the hours that disappear into it. These habits creep up quietly. They cost you money, sleep, health and time with the people you love, and before you know it they’re running your life instead of you.
And they rarely come alone. Behind them there’s often something else. Saying yes when you mean no. Worrying about things that never happen. Needing everyone’s approval. Never quite feeling good enough.
Like most people, I tried to fix it all at once. Cut everything out, start again Monday, be perfect. And like most people, I failed more times than I can count.
What finally worked was the opposite. Doing less. Slowing down. Taking one habit at a time and giving myself permission to go slow. Less overeating. Less drinking. Less gambling. Less scrolling. One small step at a time, and saving money as you go.
Just Do Less is the book I wish someone had handed me years ago. It’s short and practical, and it’s written from experience, not theory. No 300-page lecture. Just honest, simple steps you can actually keep up with.
Why this website?
This is where I’ll share blog posts, videos and practical tips to help you break the habits that are breaking you. One small step at a time.
If the book has helped you, I’d love to hear about it. And if you’re just starting out, you’re in the right place.
Richard
